| This is an RP journal. Harriet is the ten-year-old narrator of the 1997 film Digging to China. In general, she is very bored dissatisfied with her life, and has a very strong desire for “something magical” to happen to her- indeed, she has a slight obsession with the ‘unordinary’, and will easily believe things she hears about it. While she prides herself in being “weird” (and has been known to greet such accusations with a hearty “thank you!”), she’s really pretty lonely, both inside her family and out of it. During the course of the film Harriet becomes friends with Ricky, a mentally challenged man who, along with his mother, spends a week at the motel run by Harriet’s mother. This happens against the will of her older sister (who is Harriet’s actual mother, due to a teenage pregnancy- though this is kept secret until mid-movie), who considers such a relationship “inappropriate”. While Harriet clearly likes Ricky and considers him her “best friend” (and is oblivious to why anyone would have problems with their friendship), she often treats him as if he is a child who is much younger than her, telling him things like, “I am the leader and you are the follower, so you have to do what I say”. She is also often rude to people (though sometimes it isn’t without merit), and seems to have no qualms about disobeying authority if she feels that she “knows better” than they do (a sentiment which she feels quite often). Despite this, she really isn’t a “bad kid”- she has a good heart, and after all, she’s only a (fairly immature, and often bratty and insolent) ten-year-old. |
